For tasty Hunanese cuisine with a spicy kick, Di Shui Dong is a popular and inexpensive Shanghai casual dining spot for hearty local cuisine. Walk inside a small French concession storefront and up the rickety wooden staircase to discover Di Shui Dong’s rough-and-rowdy dining space within, filled with rustic wooden tables and chairs, a boisterous local crowd, and spicy red peppers displayed throughout the dining space as a reminder of what’s to come. Feast upon spicy Hunan flavours such as gan guo ji chicken chili pot, ziran paigu cumin coated ribs, and suan dou jiao beans sauteed with hot peppers and minced meat. Virtually every dish comes with a healthy dose of chili, so make sure you tell the service team if you need them to tone down the spice levels. The local Chinese beer served on tap will also help to soften the flaming effects of the chilies. Don’t expect service with a smile from the brisk and efficient local wait staff and you won’t be disappointed. Open daily between 10am - 1am. $
