The Redwood Room

Swanky and often celebrity-studded, The Clift hotel's high-ceilinged, dark-paneled lounge has the glamour of an old private library or smoking room, with cutting-edge cool Philippe Starck furniture and animated digital artwork in the frames which eerily watch you as you pass by. The room was built in 1934 and retains its original 2,000-year-old redwood walls carved from a single redwood tree. Renovations by Starck and the Morgans Hotel Group brought it up-to-date, establishing the Redwood Room as one of the hottest nightlife places in San Francisco. Fittingly, it's frequented by the city’s trendy crowd, monied businessmen, and the occasional star hoping to blend in. Drinks are expensive but well made; order a Sweet Lychee Martini, or the Lavender Martini to match the Clift's signature color scheme. The Redwood Room is conveniently close to Civic Center and Union Square, making it the perfect location to end the day or start your evening, but once you've secured one of the high-backed plush sofas, be forewarned--it won't be easy to leave.
