France is renowned for its cinematic prowess, and Paris unsurprisingly plays host to some great cinemas. Here is our pick of the best cinemas in Paris right now:
1. La Pagode Built in 1896, this listed Oriental-style building hidden away on the Left Bank has a spectacular Japanese Room in which Nouvelle Vague films were screened in the 60s. Today, cinema lovers can watch the latest art house films here and admire the garden, which is also listed, before or after the show. www.etoile-cinemas.com
2. Cinémathèque Française Housed in a Frank Gehry designed building and currently presided over by director Costa-Gavras, la Cinémathèque Française is the guardian of everything film related, hosting impressive retrospectives and exhibitions of current and bygone film makers. http://www.cinematheque.fr/
3. Studio 28 A legendary Paris cinema with traditional red velvet curtains and seats, this one-screen independent movie temple in Montmartre shows art house films from today and yesteryear. www.cinemstudio28.com
4. Le Nouvel Odeon Formerly the Racine Odeon, this left bank independent cinema was recently given a makeover by design guru Matali Crasset, creating a brightly coloured one-screen cinema, with numbered seating. Events such as baby-screenings are hosted in the mornings. www.nouvelodeon.com
