The Puerta America Hotel (Silken Group) caused a media stir in 2005 with the launch of its unique bold design concept, where nineteen world leading architects & design firms (including Zaha Hadid, Marc Newson, Jean Nouvel & David Chipperfield to name a few) were commissioned to each design a floor of this cutting-edge hotel. The result is impressive to say the least, where guests have the opportunity to experience 12 different design concepts under the one roof. Each designer was tasked with designing a different urban utopia on each floor & facade, and the result is an innovative, creative & daring fusion of different cultures (Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Western), avante garde architecture, design & art. In addition to the futuristic bedrooms, make sure that you visit Marc Newson’s sultry high-ceilinged Marmo Bar for cocktails, Christian Liaigre’s Lagrimas Negras restaurant for superb Spanish cuisine, and Jean Nouvel’s red illuminated rooftop open air bar, pool & spa area for a great views over Madrid. Be warned, however, that the Puerta America is situated on the outskirts of Barcelona city, around fifteen minutes by taxi from the centre in a rather nondescript area (yet is iIdeal for close airport access).
